Downtown Hanford preserves its multicultural heritage, including China Alley with the Taoist Temple built in 1893 and the Fox Theatre from 1929.
Hanford's downtown district reflects the city's origins as a railroad junction and agricultural hub in the 1880s. The historic Taoist Temple on China Alley, built in 1893, stands as one of the oldest continuously operating Chinese temples in the San Joaquin Valley and anchors the district's Chinese American heritage. The Fox Theatre, constructed in 1929, is a Spanish Colonial Revival landmark that once entertained residents as a movie palace and remains a centerpiece of downtown cultural life.
Today the downtown area hosts regular cultural events, farmer markets, and community gatherings. The Hanford Carnegie Museum, housed in the original 1905 Carnegie Library building that opened to the public in 1975, tells the story of Kings County's development.
